Description
In the summer of 2025, the Skåne Opera presents The Marriage of Figaro by W.A. Mozart.
A masterful relationship drama with immortal music, blending comedy, seriousness, and class struggle in a sharp, humorous critique of power and self-interest.
In brief, The Marriage of Figaro is about Figaro and Susanna, who work for Count and Countess Almaviva and are planning their wedding. However, the Count has fallen in love with Susanna and attempts to delay the wedding. With the help of the Countess and the page Cherubino, Susanna and Figaro try to outsmart the Count and make sure their wedding takes place. After a series of misunderstandings, disguises, and comedic situations, the Count finally returns to his wife, and Figaro and Susanna can finally marry.
The opera is based on a play by Beaumarchais, which, when it was written in the late 18th century, was controversial for its message that servants were as worthy as their masters and that women should have control over their own lives. We set the story on a modern-day cruise ship, where the captain, like the Count, has power over the other characters' lives. This isolated environment adds to the intrigue—while you're at sea, you can't leave, either because of poor working conditions or to escape unwanted advances...
The performance will be indoors in Swedish and lasts approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, including an intermission.
