Junior Swedish Championship in UV-Rugby
Swedish Championship in UV-Rugby for juniors at Trelleborg's bathhouse
UV-Rugby is an abbreviation of underwater rugby, which is a sport played in the deep part of a pool. The equipment consists of fins, cyclops, snorkel and white or blue hats and swimwear. The goals, which consist of two baskets, are placed on the bottom of each long side.
You play with a ball that sinks and can be passed a couple of meters underwater.
The team is made up of two goalkeepers, two defensemen and two forwards. On the edge of the pool there are six substitutes with whom you can swap freely throughout the game. Three more reserves are available and can be substituted during the game.
The matches are played in 2x15 minutes effective time with a 5 minute break between periods.
A penalty can be imposed on the players if they have violated any rule and this lasts for 2 minutes. The game is supervised by two water judges and a land judge.
The team that has placed the ball the most times in the opponent's basket wins.
This is the only sport in the world where you play in three dimensions and it is one of the few team sports where men and women compete on the same terms.
The sport, then called UV-Polo, came to Sweden in the late 1960s and today it is conducted league games and wide activities for both men, women and juniors.
The sport has Swedish Championship status since 1974 (men) and 1999 (women). Sweden is internationally very prominent and has national teams for men, women and juniors.
